We've lost an icon in the fashion industry today, the first day of NY Fashion Week, the same day of his McQ collection presentation at 3pm. At the young age of 40, when his career is better than ever, Lee McQueen committed suicide. He was found dead in his London home, this morning, at 10am. His mom, and best friend, passed away a few days ago. He was suppose to be attending her funeral tomorrow. There are no confirmations on how, but some are saying he hung himself. McQueen's latest collection, S2010, has been a huge success, spotted on celebrities everywhere. We have lost a brilliant and creative soul, who will live on forever, in our hearts and in our closets. We're sorry to see you go, but proud to have had you here.
Fans have created memorial services outside McQueen's stores in both New York and London, leaving flowers and messages. Jump for photos and more info.
The Alexander McQueen website has released this statement:
“On behalf of Lee McQueen’s family, Alexander McQueen today announces the tragic news that Lee McQueen, the founder and designer of the Alexander McQueen brand has been found dead at his home. At this stage it is inappropriate to comment on this tragic news beyond saying that we are devastated and are sharing a sense of shock and grief with Lee’s family.
Here are some of Lee's last few tweets:
He wrote: “I’m letting my followers know that my mother passed away yesterday if it she had not had me nor would you RIP mumxx.” He later added: “But life must go on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
“Been a fucking awful week but my friends have been great but now I have to some how pull myself together and finish with the HELLS ANGLES & PROLIFIC DEAMONS!!!!.”
“From heaven to hell and back again, life is a funny thing. Beauty can come from the most strangest of places even the most disgusting places.”
Lee with his beloved mother, Joyce.
