U.S. Airways Flight #1549 crashed into the freezing Hudson River between NY and NJ minutes after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport in Queens after colliding with a flock of geese and experiencing double engine failure. The pilot is being hailed as a hero for his efforts to maneuver the large aircraft into the water as safely as possible. The NY Daily News reported that the pilot radioed to LaGuardia that he had hit the birds and was having trouble with the engines. A loss of power prevented the aircraft from being able to execute a safe return to the airport. The AirBus A320, fully intact even after impact, had 146 passengers and 5 crew members aboard, all of whom were safely rescued (via FDNY, NYPD and the Coast Guard) from the sinking plane. Homeland Security press secretary Laura Keehner told the Daily News that "There is no information to indicate that this was a security-related incident. We continue to monitor the situation which at present is focused on search and rescue." The flight was headed south to Charlotte, NC.
Kudos to the pilot for a successful emergency landing and thank goodness all passengers and crew members made it out safely!
